BBS: Bulletin Board Service
a.k.a.; Bulletin Board System
A dail-in network of computers maintaining a computerized bulletin board. In my humble opinion: This should be considered to be the parent of the WWW because it provided the first world-wide access to freeware and shareware programs, acted as a global e-mail service and supported news. The BBS-provider was what the internet-provider is today.
